Bird sunglasses came from a simple idea, the drive to do more. Creator Ed Bird had been looking for a way to combine his design, business and charity skills to create a product that would ‘Look good, but have purpose too.’
The result is a unique, stylish and thoughtful collection, and for every purchase, Bird help distribute a solar light through their ‘Share Your Sun’ partnership with Solar Aid.
“When I heard about the work Solar Aid were doing in remote communities in Africa, replacing toxic kerosene lamps with clean, efficient solar lights, I knew I wanted to work with them. ‘Share Your Sun’ is about business with purpose; sunglasses that look and feel great, and contribute to a more sustainable world.”
The designs bring artistic detail to classic shapes, putting the utmost care into the manufacturing process, from designing our signature feather etching to building ongoing relationships with suppliers and partners we trust.
Polarised lenses reduce glare, enhance colours and sharpen vision. 100% UVA and UVB protection (UV400) comes as standard and each pair comes with a Share Your Sun microsuede cloth, leather strap and either our soft cork or beautiful handmade leather case.
For Bird, business is a family affair, with wife Sarah, and brothers Lawrence, Paul, William and brother-in-law Gary all involved in the company: “I come from a close family of five siblings, and we’re all involved in various creative and business pursuits. It made complete sense to have my brothers on board.”
Unsurprisingly, each model is named after a different bird, with names like Finch, Dipper and Kiwi, inspired by our travels across New Zealand, America and the Azores, and adventures closer to home in Devon.
“To start with, I designed these sunglasses for me, as I couldn’t find anything out there that ticked all the boxes. We spend a lot of time out and about, whether in other countries or closer to home – I wanted sunglasses that would work well, look good and feel good while we’re exploring. I’ve taken these all over the world now and I know they stand up to the test.”
